Unexpected Opportunities on Social Media

Hello,

Today is the day i live up to my promise of the six part South Africa insight blogs- yay!.
Please excuse the length of the posts as some may be word heavy, there is so much to share and i do not want miss anything. Luckily there are loads of photos so soon there shall be photo heavy posts to even it out a little ;)

Where was I again? Oh yeah

Hello,

The first post is dedicated to Social Media. Before i get into the break down of my ICS story i wanted to quickly share with you how one tweet completely changed my life for three months, i hope you get a little inspiration. The first world is lucky enough to have everything at the tips of their fingers and the click of a button, but we are also plagued by the power of choice which dictates which buttons we click and what our finger tips type in the vast web.

As a modern day teen i find that i spend countless hours online either, watching stuff, blogging, reading blogs, tweeting, scrolling through timelines etc. This is very unfortunate as most of the time im online -like many of you- i end up being unproductive and waste a whole day. Luckily this changed a year ago this month when i was scrolling through my friends timeline on twitter and found a post re tweeted by a mutual acquaintance.

This post was an advert for the ICS (international citizen service) programme which was encouraging people between the ages 18-25 to apply for a volunteering placement abroad. Thinking nothing of it and generally wanting to do anything other than finish my coursework i clicked on the link and read more about the programme. A few minutes later in my procrastination daze i clicked apply and within 20 minutes had submitted an application for what was about to become one of the best summers of my life.

Unexpected opportunities are the best kind of opportunities. When using Social Media it is easy to get carried away by the superficial celebrity and entertainment news however, recently i have discovered that there is a completely different side to it. Twitter is hands down the best social network out there -aside from Linkedin- on the career front. The search bar has become one of my best friends introducing me to the world of work and industries i did not know existed.

What are you looking for; an internship? a volunteer programme? your first job? a new job?. Whatever it is i suggest that you type in a keyword on the search bar and skim through tweets.

This simple action can be the beginning of a new journey, it can open up new doors and connections all within 140 characters. thousands of jobs and opportunities are posted on this platform, by taking the chance and clicking them you can create a new path for yourself so i dare you to try it. In fact i DOUBLE dare you. See where it takes you. It took me 5631 miles away from home for three months and i do not regret it.

Peace and Love
